Maintenance

The maintenance we offer in Eixverd is personalized and adapted to the needs and characteristics of each roof / garden. Usually, we like gardens with a natural appearance (as opposed to an English garden) but making sure that they are respectful with insects and the environment is a priority. We use organic phytosanitary products ordinarily and only use chemical phytosanitary products as a last resort.

In a usual maintenance we clean the space, prune when necessary, observe the evolution and provide improvements for the correct development (if we see deficiencies), and take care of the diseases or pests of the plants if they have them. We also fertilize and adjust the watering system according to the water demand and the season and we inspect the irrigation system.

MAINTENANCE OF EXTENSIVE ROOFS OF PLANTS WITH A HIGH ESSENTIAL OIL CONTENT

We design and install urban lavender plantations on unused roofs in residential buildings or on businesses’ inner courtyard roofs.

The objective of this project is the cultivation of medium to large-scale lavender plantations on the roofs of buildings or in the interior of the city block’s inner courtyards in l’Eixample de Barcelona. Planting these lavender fields would bring visual satisfaction to the neighbors, offset the negative environmental effects of the city, and serve as our long-term business interest.

We propose a model where, in exchange for free maintenance, we obtain plants, from which we can extract by-products such as hydrolates or essential oils, and from which we can obtain an economic benefit, compensating the maintenance costs.

Benefits

Although it is said that green roofs do not require maintenance, it is not true: maintenance is a basic tool that provides benefits in many aspects:

Saving water:

  • The maintenance of the irrigation system allows us to ensure the proper functioning of the entire system and to adapt the water irrigation every season, saving substantial amounts of water. Additionally, it allows us to detect possible leaks or blockages, and to be able to repair them before they exacerbate.

Good plant performance

  • Maintenance of the plants. Although we always try to design the green roof with low-maintenance plants, our experience allows us to say that with the basic and essential care (pruning, detection of pests or diseases, fertilization, etc.), the plants will remain healthy, and the green roofs will have an exuberant appearance, they will be green all year round and with a neat appearance, becoming attractive and positive spaces for people.

Adventitious plants control:

  • Adventitious plants, if unchecked, can become a problem; both in green spaces, where they compete with the plants we want to grow, and in the inert spaces of the roof, which can be born in the middle of the cracks or in corners, producing an unkempt appearance. In our maintenance we control them manually (since we do not use herbicides), in flower beds, paths and in a place of leisure.

Good drainage of the green roof:

  • Maintenance of the drainage system. All green roofs must have a good drainage system, and one of the most important parts of this system are the drains, which we always check for clogs caused by leaves, roots or other elements.

Frequently asked questions about Maintenance

How frequent will maintenance visits be?

Usually, in the hot season, ranging from April to September, we visit roofs with ornamental plants twice a month and in the cold season, from October to March, only once. But there are also green roofs that require a maintenance every trimester. If the roof has a garden, and you do not want to take care of it yourself, the maintenance days increase, since the tasks are different from those of an ornamental garden and they require more care. Generally, in the hot season, we would come once a week, and in the cold season, once every 15 days. The amount of hours we dedicate to maintenance will be determined mainly by the m2 of green roof.

What products do you use to combat plant pests and diseases?

When we detect a problem in any of the plants, we use natural products andremedies to combat the imbalance. We always promote biodiversity and flowering to have "friendly" insects, which help us fight insects that create problems. If all this does not work, and the problem is out of hand, we we will resort to using a chemical product, although we always choose the one that is the least toxic as possible, both for people and for the beneficial fauna of the roof.

How much does maintenance cost and what does it include?

The number of hours it takes to maintain a roof is determined mainly by the m2 of green space and by the complexity of the maintenance. Depending on the m2 and the location of the property, each visit can be €50, covering the phytosanitary products and fertilizer needed, but not including the labor of our gardener or gardener.
